Trends aren't easy

& even though the marketing campaign will tell you otherwise, they don't look good on everyone.

Truthfully, how often do you feel like you rock a trend? I'm talking what actually flatters your natural shape and coloring, not simply what you think is pretty.

I love the soft, muted colors plastering the pages of A&F and Anthro, but they do not look great on me. Can I wear them? Of course. Do I feel my best, most confident in them? That's a big 'ol negative.

On the other hand, bell bottoms and kelly green haven't been in style in years (though they're both making a come back recently), but I know that they maximize my natural features and bring out the best in my appearance. I'd wear kelly green, corduroy bell bottoms over a chunky knit merlot sweater anyday.

But here's the thing...

Do you know what looks great on you?
Are warm or cool hues more flattering? Do dusty, muted colors compliment you or wash you out? What about the shades of color: do lighter shades or darker shades create more harmony in your look? Are patterns with small, nature-inspired objects or geometric patters best?

Real Life Difference

The face on the right is brighter, fresher, more alive. There’s a harmony in the all the colors happening, even with the brightness of her lips and the pop of color in her necklace.

The picture on the left isn’t *bad,* or ugly; the colors go somewhat well in the sense that they’re all warmer in temperature. BUT, do you see how the skin looks slightly yellow? Are you having a hard time focusing on/noticing anything other than the dark red lips? Do you notice how the eyes fade into the background? The colors aren’t harmonizing as well as they could, and it’s distracting.

Here we have two very similar looks: defined brows, defined but natural eyes, and a pop on the lips. Yet, one works much better than the other.
